Christmas Tamales

Christmas for our family has always been about Christmas Eve, Tamales and Family. On Christmas Eve, we have a tradition of everyone getting together at my mom's house around 10am and helping to make tamales. From the youngest to the oldest, we all take part and have assigned jobs. This year the youngest was Melissa, who's two years old and her job was to entertain us, and she did an awesome job. The next youngest that really did help was Fred Jr and this year he was a trainee under Bebe's watchful eye in learning how to wash "hojas" (corn husks that are used to wrap the tamale in).
Then there's the "big guns", the seasoned veterans who "amasar" (knead the corn meal, chili powder, baking powder, salt, lard and meat drippings). For quite a few years now that job was left to my brothers. Here's a picture of them last year...But unfortunately Jaime had to work this year, so I had to step into his shoes and help my brother Fred "amasar". (And let me tell you, it wasn't as fun as it looks. My arthritis, was really acting up that day, but two Advil's and a beer really helped me get through it.)

Here's Fred's lovely hands hard at work.

Here's my sad pathetic hurting little hands trying really hard not to work! And so here we are ready to go...We have the Hoja's cleaned and ready to be used to wrap the tamales... We have both pots of masa, Fred's is on the right and looks really nice and smooth. Mine is on the left and I didn't have the strength left to smooth and pat the top, but it worked just the same! Here's the meat that my mom cooked up that morning. She uses beef and pork and then we shred it all up and she uses I believe dried California Chile's, but it could be New Mexico one's, I'm not really sure, to make the chili that is mixed with the meat and then she adds garlic and onion powder and salt and who knows what else. All I know is it's yummy, I can eat this just by itself in a flour tortilla.Last, but not least...the black olives. We are an olive family! We're only supposed to put one in each tamale, but during the year as we eat the ones that are frozen and heated up later you may find one, two, three, even four olives!

So I said that everyone helps, from the youngest to the oldest. Here's a picture of the oldest, my dad Federico. He's an old pro at tamale making and he loves to get in on this part. He's not to big on helping with all the preparations ahead of time, but when it's time to actually make the tamales, he's ready! Here's another pro, my sister-in-law Norma. She can whip those tamales out like there's no tomorrow. She likes to spread the masa on the corn husks and she then hands them to her husband (my brother Fred) and he puts the meat and olives in and wraps them. Norma makes hundreds of dozens of tamales during the season leading up to Christmas and she sells them. Want to place an order for Christmas 2009, just hit me up! I'm the hook-up.Here's the gang. My sister Lisa just arrived, she had to work half day and shows up right after work to get in on the fun. And my mom...she's the floor lady, the crew chief, the big kahuna, the boss! She's making sure Lisa doesn't dilly-dally too long, we have a schedule to keep! And Lisa wastes no time shedding her sweater and putting up her hair and she's hard at it!As the tamales are wrapped and completed, they are place in these plastic bins that my mom has out back in the "cuartito". Every Christmas she takes them out, washes them out and gets them ready for the big day. We try to make the tamales all a uniform size, so they'll cook evenly. As the crew continues spreading and wrapping, Fred and my mom start the cooking process by placing them in a certain way into the "olla" (pot). Don't ask me how they do it, I have no clue but there is quite of bit of expertise involved in this process. And I want to give a shout out to my brother Fred who has really stepped up in helping my mom in the kitchen this year. At Thanksgiving he has always carved the turkey, but this year he even made the gravy and it was super delish! He also made the gravy for my mom's birthday, but that's coming up in a different post. But again Fred...thank you!And VoilĂ ! The finished product. These are a lot of trouble to make, especially since we usually make several dozens, but sooooooo worth it! Here's a naked one...unwrapped, mmmmmmm. See the black? That's the olives and the juice from the meat soaks into the masa and it's just heaven in a corn husk! Merry Christmas to us!Once they are all done and we've eaten our fill and taken some over to share with neighbors and friends, my mom freezes them and you can come over on almost any random Sunday morning and there will be tamales in the oven. As the years go by and all the kids get older, they will always have this memory of what Christmas Eve is in our family. Sure we have ocassional fights and bickering while we make the tamales, but all in all it's a good time and we love being together and we look forward to it every year.

Iwanna Wednesdays

A very special Iwanna wednesday for a very special night. Iwanna today and forever after this:

And I give to you as a gift from me, the following words regarding peace; for you to enjoy, and gain inspiration from.

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." - Jimi Hendrix

"Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one." - John Lennon

"True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice." Martin Luther King, Jr.

"If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies." Moshe Dayan

"People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within." Ramona L. Anderson

For everything there is a season, And a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to throw away; A time to tear, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate, A time for war, and a time for peace. -Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Merry Christmas

and on Earth...Peace
Merry Christmas

Once upon a time,

A long, long time ago.

Begins the story of a baby,

That most of you should know.

His daddy's name was Joseph,

And Mary was His mom,

This babe was very special

He was God's only Son.

Mary rode a camel,

And Joseph walked along,

While angels watched from afar

Celebrating in song.

When they arrived in Bethlehem,

The couple was turned away,

By keepers of the inn

Telling them they had no place to stay.

Now Joseph- he insisted

That his wife had someplace to stay,

The keeper told him of a stable

With animals and hay.

Mary and Joseph’s journey ended

In a stable filled with hay,

It was there that Mary gave birth,

To our King on this day.

Some angels came from heaven,

And they began to sing.

To the shepherds in the fields below,

"Glad tidings do we bring!"

Dinner with Ruben, Raelynn, Ash and the Girls!

I just got back from my dinner with some old friends. I hadn't seen them in probably over a year. It's an odd story how I met these friends. Several years ago, I used to go dancing on Friday nights and sometimes a random Saturday as well. My sisters friend Lupe was single and I was single and she knew of this place in Bakersfield where you could go to dance Mexican music.

This place we went to was a casino. The north side of the building was a casino and on the south side was a club that had a bar and different bands played Mexican music. By Mexican music I mean cumbias and rancheras and some cha-chas. So we started going there and we had a really good time. We would meet some guys and dance the whole night and then if we liked the guys and they seemed trustworthy, we would meet up with them at Denny's and they would buy us breakfast. It was fun and harmless and good exercise.

Through the casino I met Ruben and Raelynn. They would dance there pretty often and I loved watching them. They danced really well together, it was like watching dancing with the stars...well except without the stars themselves :-)

Slowly but surely Ruben, Raelynn and I became friends and when they closed down the casino our little group moved to a new place called The Jungle at the Hill House. We had a really good time there as well except that without a casino full of men there were less men to dance with, but we made do.

Then once they closed the Jungle, we all moved over to the Tam O'Shanter and that was the last place that we all danced together at. It's been a long time since we've been dancing together but Raelynn and I managed to keep in touch, mostly due to effort on her part; she's such a good friend.

Tonight was fun. They just moved into a new house a few months ago and this was the first time I had been over to see it. It's a really nice house and Raelynn is a great decorator. She's also a really great cook. She made this dish with chicken and Lipton onion soup mix that was sooooooo good. I'll definitely have to get the recipe. She also bakes a mean baked potato. When I bake a potato they're always still kinda hard in the middle, but hers were very good and soft and moist. Excellent meal Raelynn!

Ruben was very proud to show me pictures of a group of kids that he's training in some kind of martial art. I know he's gonna kick me, but I don't remember if it was Karate or Tai Kwan Do, but Raelynn's son Asher is a brown belt and he's won several trophies and he's the State Champion, I forget his exact title. But he's only 10 years old and he's already so accomplished.

I had a good time, thank you Ruben, Raelynn and Ash. I'll have to have them over to my home after the first of the year.

How to make Bows, for any occasion and also recycle old magazines and a wrap-up of my exciting weekend!

Whew! I'm pooped! Today was a really, really busy day for me. Actually the whole weekend was. Yesterday I finished up my Christmas shopping with my sister. We had a nice breakfast together and I colored her hair, not at breakfast you understand, because we had breakfast at Denny's and Denny's kinda frowns upon people running a beauty salon from their booths, plus you don't have really good water pressure in their sinks and you have to keep waving your hand in front of that little do-hickey that makes the water come on and off, but anyway, that was yesterday. Today I colored my own hair. No grayness in any of my Christmas pictures, lemme tell ya! And since I'm going to be off the 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th I decided I would finish up all my gift wrapping, do my laundry, scrub my tub and shower and sweep and mop and vacuum my floors so that I could enjoy all those five days without worrying about doing any housekeeping at all!

So, finally, about 7pm I got online to check my email and stuff and I was kinda stumbling around and I found this really cute little video of a really cute little girl, oh well, not such a little girl, but little compared to me OK? And she's going to show us how to make Bows and I just love her accent and her personality. Hope you enjoy!

More Christmas Decorating Pictures

Well I tried taking some night pictures of my Christmas tree and other decorations. They're not perfect, but a least they have that special Christmas time romantic glow.

Our house, is a very, very, very fine house.
With two cats in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy 'cause of you.

OK, well...so we don't have cats, but it's still a very, very fine house don't you think?

Here's a very special ornament that will be forever near an dear to my heart. It's a new one this year given to me by my favorite (and only) brother-in-law, Guero. He bought it for me at the beach the last time he took his family there. It's filled with sand and has a bunch of teeny tiny little shells and starfish. If you stare at it long enough you can hear the ocean..whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. See told ya! That was the ocean in your head!

And here's my mantle at night with the lights on. I forgot to light the candles, but still very pretty. See how those mirrored diamonds hanging on either side catch and reflect the light? I love them! A great investment.

And here's another very special Christmas display. Not just because it's the Nativity and you see Baby Jesus, but because this nativity was made by my mother's own special beautiful hands. She made them in a ceramics class she took many, many years ago. I believe at that time my daughter was only about a year old, so these would be 26 years old now. WOW! They are painted with pearlized paint and with these little clear lights it makes the figures shine in pale blues and pinks and purples. This is truly special to me.

Another view of the Nativity.

And I love this angel. She's supposed to have a tapered candle in the holder she's holding, but I didn't have any. This candle was given to my mom by my sister and my mom gave it to me because I guess she knows my sister doesn't like clutter and taking care of things and I would take care of it for both of them. My mother and my sisters hearts are both in this angel.

Oh and see the little shoe tree? Hee hee! A play on words, shoe tree. It's a Christmas tree with Barbie's shoes. My daughter April gave this to me for Christmas a couple of years ago. It's one of my very favs, I love shoes and barbie and it's a Hallmark ornament. She also gave me a Harley motorcycle which I failed to get a picture of. Maybe next year. But isn't it cute? A shoe tree, get it? Oh and the crystal tea light holder in the middle of the angel and the shoe tree is one of a set of two given to me by my dear friends Ruben and Raelynn for Christmas a couple of years ago. We're having dinner on Monday, I'll get some pics. And the other little tea light candle holder in the black wrought iron holder is another of a set given to me by my sister in law Connie as a housewarming present when I moved into this home. I use them year round, they just happened to be displayed with the Christmas things.

This is my Faberge Egg (it's not a real Faberge, but would you have known that if I had not told you?). So yeah, this is my very expensive, unique and one of a kind Faberge Egg. The ornament to the right is my "Miss Kitty" ornament. Remember Gunsmoke? And the whore with the heart of gold...Miss Kitty? This ornament reminds me of her because she always wore a feather in her hair.

And this is my chandelier ornament, given to me by April, my daughter. She knows me, I love glittery things! And she also gave me the heart to the right of it, that one is gold, a heart of Gold, pretty huh?

This angel was given to me by a friends I haven't seen in years named Susi. She was one of my study group partners when I went back to school to get my Bachelors. She gave it to me for Christmas one year. That's why I love giving Christmas ornaments or Christmas decorations because then for years and years at least once a year you think of that person when you see the gift she gave you. April also gave me the butterfly ornament, she's probably going to want all these ornaments back one day :-)

Here's another angle of the Heart ornament. Doesn't it shine and glitter beautifully?

Here's a further away view of the mantle. I have ornaments hanging from the crystal candle holders as well. I have a ton of ornaments on my tree and I still had some left over to put on the mantle. You see the silver things hanging down from the mantle? Again, more ornaments.
And last but not least...a couple of pictures of my Christmas Tree at night, with the lights lit up. There...I'm done with this post so I can go lay down on the couch under my electric throw and take a nap under the tree...Merry Christmas!
